In May, Olmert was sentenced to eight months in prison after being convicted for accepting cash-filled envelopes from an American-Jewish businessman, Morris Talansky, and using it for personal and not political expenses.

“A large weight has been lifted from my heart with the Supreme Court deciding to acquit me of the main charge in the Holyland affair,”Olmerttold reporters afterward”.
Following the sentencing Olmert was quoted as saying that he’d never accepted a bribe but would respect the court.
The six-year prison sentence handed down against Olmert in May last year was the first ever against a former Israeli premier for corruption.
Olmert’s appeal itself has already delayed his imprisonment for around 18 months from the May 2014 sentencing date. Olmert is due to enter prison on February 15, Channel 2 television reported.
Other officials include Jerusalem’s former chief engineer Uri Sheetrit, Olmert’s bureau chief at the time Shula Zaken, and Olmert’s successor as mayor to Jerusalem Uri Lupolianski.
The Supreme court although upheld a lesser charge related to Olmert taking a bribe of about $15,000.
“A former prime minister will go to jail, convicted of one of the most serious offences in our penal code, of bribery”, said prosecution attorney Yaron Golomb.

Olmert, originally a member of the Likud party who joined the center-left Kadima party in 2005, resigned from his post as prime minister in 2008, once corruption allegations started to surface against him.
The bombing took place in the city of Mardan, outside the regional office of the National Database and Registration Authority, which issues identity cards, according to senior police officer Saeed Khan Wazir. Four of the five justices ruled that assertion could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Israeli legal affairs commentator Yonah Jeremy Bob, however, warned that Olmert’s acquittal of the Holyland-linked charge may actually make it harder to get convictions of high-profile figures. If the appeal is rejected, that prison time could be added to Tuesday’s verdict.
