Title showdown with Alabama has special meaning for Clemson’s Dabo Swinney
While Clemson has gone 34 years since its one and only national championship, Alabama will be seeking its fourth national title in seven years.

It burned Alabama so badly to be beaten in the College Football Playoff semifinals a year ago that the Crimson Tide was determined to handle its business differently this time around.
Alabama embarrassed Big Ten champion, Michigan State on New Year’s Eve, with a hammering defense and equally dominant offense, earning their way to the College Football Playoff National Championship game with a 38-0 trouncing.
The Tide now advances to the CFP National Championship Game against the No. 1 Clemson Tigers set for Monday, January 11, 2016, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
But the biggest difference was the day the games were played.
Clemson, a team once known for such inexplicable stumbles that a derisive term was coined for it, is headed to the national championship game with a still-perfect record after a 37-17 smackdown of Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Thursday.
They had plenty to cheer about, even after Lawson went out with a left knee injury in the opening minutes and watched the rest of the game from the bench.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson turned in another stellar all-around performance, beating Oklahoma with his arm and his legs.
“What is so good about Dabo is we know he’s very genuine in his love for Clemson even though he graduated from Alabama”, said Thompson, who worked on the security detail for coaches from Danny Ford to Swinney. Watson, who was named the game’s offensive MVP, passed for one touchdown and ran for another.
Greg Ward Jr. ran for two touchdowns and threw for another score, leading Houston past turnover-plagued Florida State in the Peach Bowl.
And he tried not to dwell on the stakes being so much higher for such a blowout loss in his final game Thursday night. The first sack, by Jonathan Allen, ended a promising drive during a scoreless first quarter. And I think Mark and his staff have done a great job of getting better and better players.
The Tigers didn’t just beat the Sooners. “And I said ’15 for 15, ‘ with the message being let’s make them print 15 tickets this year, somehow, some way”. So I got off our bus and went and stood in front of their bus. Now they’ll hear all offseason that they didn’t belong in the playoff or that they only got in because of a botched punt snap by MI or that Ohio State didn’t show up in losing to them at home. The senior completed 25 for 30 for a career-best 286 yards.
“So we knew that we would have to throw the bubbles and the smokes and the outside perimeter stuff and try to get them blocked on the perimeter to be able to move the ball effectively”.
Clemson piled up 550 yards in the game, sealing the victory on Gallman’s 4-yard touchdown run with 10:48 remaining. They held Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Derrick Henry to 75 rushing yards, his third-lowest output of the season, and placed the burden of moving the offense nearly entirely on Coker’s arm. But it wasn’t like those guys were super talented, way faster and way bigger than all of us, just pushing us around. It’s a great opportunity for them.
“I feel happy about how I played”, he said.

Until this season, the Tigers were known for such inexplicable disappointments that a term was coined for it – Clemsoning. “I’m proud as hell of them to get where they are”.
