Defensive Recap: Michigan Downs Florida, 41-7
And the Gators were occasionally brilliant in doing so, despite losing their best quarterback.

MI (9-3, 14th) finished a disappointing 5-7 season past year and went for broke by hiring Jim Harbaugh away from the San Francisco 49ers. And Rudock definitely has weapons to throw it to, as wide receivers Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson and tight end Jake Butt each have at least 45 catches for 600 yards this season.
WHOOPS: Florida squandered its first chance to take a lead less than five minutes into the game, when Gators holder Johnny Townsend was unable to hold onto the ball as the Gators attempted a fake on a field-goal attempt.
The lone highlight for the Gators? The Gators mounted drive after drive, but upon getting deeper and deeper into them is when the youth of sophomore quarterback Treon Harris came into play with poor decisions and an inability to lead the team to the finish line.
McElwain took a program that had stagnated under Will Muschamp and re-energized it in 2015, leading it to heights very few expected were even possible.
The Wolverines showed balanced, going over 200 yards on the ground as well.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh’s first season in Ann Arbor ended on a high note as the 14th-ranked Michigan Wolverines (10-3) notched a convincing 41-7 victory over the 19th-ranked Florida Gators (10-4) in the 2016 Citrus Bowl on Friday.
What was stunning was how the Gators’ highly touted defense, including top National Football League prospect Vernon Hargreaves III, spent the day masquerading as postal workers.
MI played without safety Jabrill Peppers, who sat out with an undisclosed injury.
If redshirt junior running back Drake Johnson gave any indication, their goals will be lofty. Tied after one. 17-7 MI at the half. “I thought their quarterback did a great job in the play action game and was real accurate”. The senior Iowa transfer has been prone to mistakes at times, but he was composed and precise against a good Florida pass defense. Harris was looking to get Florida on the board, but he tossed a weak pass and Wilson was able to bring it down and continue the defensive momentum for MI. “For people not to pick us to win this game is ridiculous, but I can understand with the way we’ve played offensively the past two games”.
Michigan’s domination was two-fold: Its defense limited Florida in every facet of its offensive game plan.
There was Michigan’s offensive line, blasting open holes and creating running room, after not always creating so much running room this season. Florida and No. 14 MI looked evenly matched during a deadlocked defensive battle through a quarter and a half. The Wolverines would go on to outscore Florida 24-0 in the second half. “They outphysicaled us. No doubt about it. Sometimes a guy just gets the best of you and they did that today”.
“The game is defined by your front guys”, McElwain said. Like the new MI coach, McElwain had taken his Florida program to unexpected heights during his first season at the helm, winning 10 games and reaching the SEC title game.

Though he might have had better records as a coach in both the National Football League and at his previously college coaching job at Stanford, Harbaugh said there is something special about doing it with this particular group.
