Tennessee dominates Northwestern in Outback Bowl
Tennessee (8-4) and Northwestern (10-2) both enter this game having been victorious in five in a row.

“They had some really nice little wrinkles that they attacked our defense with, so you’ve got to tip your cap to their coaching staff”, Fitzgerald said.
At stake • Both teams ended the season on five-game winning streaks that came on the heels of losses that ruined the chance to play for conference championships.
“Jalen was a game-time decision, and it’s a testament to his decision to work hard to get back (that he was able to do what he did today)”, said Jones, who has guided Tennessee to its first consecutive bowl game victories since 1996-97.
The 45-6 Outback Bowl win over Northwestern doesn’t mean a lot, because the Wildcats aren’t very good, but the win will once again have people drinking the Orange Kool-Aid after closing their year with seven wins in the last eight games.
Hurd reached paydirt from three yards out midway through the third and the defense followed it up by intercepting struggling Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson for the second time. Unlike good rushing teams built around one NFL-prospect back, the Vols feature three guys with more than 600 yards, led by RB Jalen Hurd, who gained 1,158 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. Michigan’s Jake Rudock suffered a shoulder injury in the 42-13 loss to Ohio State, and it was initially feared that he would miss the bowl game, but the senior quarterback will make his final collegiate start on New Year’s Day. Northwestern also had 10-win teams in 1903, 1995 and 2012. The sophomore running back finished with 130 rushing yards and one touchdown on 24 carries. Tennessee (8-4) dropped four games by a combined 17 points during a 3-4 start that easily could have mushroomed into a long year for a young team facing one of the nation’s toughest schedules.
It’s Tennessee’s fourth Outback Bowl appearance and it’s first since 2008.
“We came out in the second half and just turned it over”, said Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald.
Facts & figures • MI won each of the two previous meetings, taking the 2003 Outback Bowl and 2008 Citrus Bowl….
The Outback Bowl between the Tennessee Volunteers and Northwestern Wildcats was a one-sided affair on Friday, as the Volunteers steamrolled the Wildcats 45-6. He has thrown for 2,125 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing for 623 yards and 9 scores.
Of note: Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly has thrown for 3,740 yards, 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
“The road to success is always under construction, and we need to continue to recruit and develop, and continue to grow and elevate our football program”, Jones said.

Even before the bowl, the Vols showed they were trending upwards, accomplishing things, like eight wins and an Outback Bowl trip, that hadn’t been done since the Phillip Fulmer days. They are also allowing just 4.49 yards per play, which ranks eighth nationally and third in the SEC. Rudolph led the Big 12 with 57 passes of 20 yards or more and finished his sophomore regular season with 3,591 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Oliver completed 6 of 13 passes for 72 yards with two picks. The Wildcats ran an NCAA-record 115 offensive plays in that game. The Volunteers went into the halftime locker room with a 17-6 lead. The Vols limited Northwestern to just 261 total yards.
