Christian McCaffrey breaks Stanford, Rose Bowl records in romp
He broke the record for the most all-purpose yards in a Rose Bowl with 368 and became the first player to record more than 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in a Rose Bowl.

With defenses forced to account for McCaffrey on every play, the Cardinal showcased its impressive offensive line, Kevin Hogan’s play-calling ability and other weapons like receiver Michael Rector, who caught two passes, both for touchdowns.
Ezekiel Elliott ran for 149 yards and matched a Fiesta Bowl record with four touchdowns, sparking Ohio State’s prolific offense.
During McCaffrey’s first-half outburst, national college football writers like Bruce Feldman and Pat Forde tweeted that some Heisman voters might have changed their votes had the balloting took place after the postseason.
In a white and Cardinal blur, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey sliced through the Iowa defense after taking a short pass from quarterback Kevin Hogan on the game’s first play from scrimmage and ran untouched to the end zone.
“The Big Ten has a lot of pub, (but) they had a couple big blowouts the last two days, so it kind of goes to show they got exposed”, Murphy said. “Just love playing with these guys”.
The Christian McCaffrey show rolled through the Rose Bowl on Friday with the same jaw-dropping devastation it unleashed during the regular season.
“I think they’ve done good to even get into the Rose Bowl”, Liz Drennon said.
Already prominently in NCAA record books, McCaffrey needed all of 11 seconds to write his name into the Rose Bowl annals. Hogan’s opening throw to McCaffrey was the second-longest TD pass in Rose Bowl history and the longest play given up all season by Iowa. It was just the third time this season he finished a game with negative rushing yards, and marked the lowest rushing total of his career.
McCaffrey did most of his work before the sun set behind the San Gabriel Mountain range that brackets the historic stadium, helping the Pac-12 champions to a 35-0 halftime lead and frustrating Iowa almost every time he touched the ball.
The impressive result could leave Stanford ranked second or third in the nation in the final polls.
It was a breathtaking display of football skills that left his own teammates shaking their heads in awe. “Certainly wish all of them the best as they move forward, and I know they’re going to all do well, and our team will move forward as well”. “So, you know, it’s just a real credit to him”, Ferentz said.
McCaffrey, an Academic All-American who also won the Hornung Award as America’s most versatile player, finished with 2,109 rushing yards for the year, breaking Toby Gerhart’s school record for a single season. Ferentz was asked if McCaffery was better in person than he was on film.
If it’s not McCaffrey, who added a 63-yard punt return touchdown before the game was 16 minutes old, it’s Vince Young. “But just like this game won’t define this team, one play doesn’t define a game”.
David Shaw walked off the field on Friday night clinging to the Rose Bowl Trophy but he could also take another honor after the No. 5-ranked Cardinal crushed No. 6-ranked Iowa, 45-16.
Stanford scores in Rose Bowl.
If you like your college bowl games to be see-saw affairs that go down to the wire, then you were sorely disappointed by the New Year’s Day schedule.
Iowa had never trailed by more than seven points at any point in its magical season, which included the first 12-0 start in school history before a narrow loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten title game.
The play has a name: Hawkeye.

The next snap, they handed it back to McCaffrey. Matt VandeBerg and Akrum Wadley caught Beathard’s late scoring passes.
