Iran condemned on Thursday as arbitrary and illegal reported USA plans for new sanctions on worldwide companies and individuals over Tehran’s ballistic missile program.

According to The WSJ, the White House was recently warned by Iranian officials that new sanctions would be considered by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a violation of the brokered nuclear agreement.

They also put in jeopardy a landmark deal struck in July between Iran and six world powers including the United States, which is due to be formally implemented within weeks.

The US Navy told Al Jazeera in an email that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard test-fired rockets in close proximity to several US and French vessels, as well as commercial ships.

Critics of the planned sanctions had already charged they weren’t an adequate USA response to Iran’s continuing development of its missile program.

Washington contends those actions violate the United Nations resolution, but Iran says that the missiles are not capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and aren’t covered under the ban.
