OK St. tricked, trampled by Ole Miss in Sugar Bowl, 48-20
The Ole Miss Rebels picked up their first Sugar Bowl win since 1969 with a 48-20 destruction of the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Sugar Bowl on Friday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Oklahoma State is making its second trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl and its first since the 1945 team completed its ideal 9-0 season with a 33-13 win over St. Mary’s (Calif.) in New Orleans. The running game was stagnant again, finding life only behind quarterback J.W. Walsh, and primary quarterback Mason Rudolph averaged a mediocre 5.8 yards per pass attempt.
After last year’s capitulation in the Peach Bowl, this year’s Sugar Bowl victory serves as a redemption for Ole Miss and could act as a springboard heading into the 2016 season. Oklahoma State Cowboys rank at 14 for 40.3 road passing yards where as Mississippi Rebels rank at 85 for allowing 29.0 passing yards at home. “Now days, at this level of college, most teams will come up with creative blitzes and they like to change the fronts up a lot”.
The Ole Miss fans – who were cheering for the Rebels at the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 1970 – were already in a frenzy when one more trick play by Coach Hugh Freeze brought down the house. Treadwell twice beat OSU cornerback Kevin Peterson for TDs, once on a 34-yard fade route and another on a 10-yard slant.
The Rebels added touchdowns on three of their next four possessions, capping the half by having Kelly roll right and briefly stare down receivers in that direction before pivoting than lobbing the ball back to his left. Meanwhile, Oklahoma St. exceeded expectations, however stumbled across two late season losses to Baylor and Oklahoma.
“The first day that we got back for bowl practice, Coach Freeze set the tone of what our expectations are”, tight end Evan Engram said in the days prior to Friday’s rout. The Cowboys yielded 554 yards to the Rebels, with 347 coming through the air. If the Cowboys have a one-two punch of quarterbacks, Ole Miss relies on their star defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche.
“I think guys are excited just because people seem to realize the opportunity we have and how important the game is”. The Cowboys failed to score a touchdown until late in the third quarter, when the game was well out of hand.
The SEC West was not the historical power some predicted it would be – remember when all seven teams were ranked in the top 25 poll after week 1?
Tunsil sat out the second half, which means that was probably his last ever play as a Rebel. And they have a defensive end that is projected to be a first-round pick.

(17) MI 41, (19) Florida 7: In Orlando, Fla., Jake Rudock threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns and Michigan’s defense dominated throughout in the Wolverines’ victory over Florida in the Citrus Bowl. You can go with Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott or Kelly as your top choice and there’s certainly been no shortage of argument about which is better, but the truth is there’s not a wrong answer. They could play three-man rush and drop eight in coverage being ahead by more than two scores and then three scores. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20, and the Cardinal lost two games this season.
