Singer Natalie Cole, star and daughter of legend, dead at 65
For the late soul and jazz diva Natalie Cole, who died on Thursday at the age of 65, her mortality was weighing on her mind as far back as 2012. In 2010, the Society of Singers awarded her the Society of Singers Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions towards music. She was a lovely and generous person who will be greatly missed. She seemed to revel in the intimacy of vocal collaboration, exuding an effervescence that could levitate the standards. Jazz and soul were in her blood, but she was a natural pop singer, drawing the listener in with both smoothness and heat.

Cole is well-known for her 1991 album “Unforgettable …”
Her career was inextricably linked to that of her father.
Having spent more than 40 years in the music industry, having followed in the footsteps of her famous father Nat King Cole, news of her death provoked a flurry of tributes from her peers, with legendary jazz singer Tony Bennett posting a heartfelt message on Instagram on Friday (01Jan16).
Cole announced in October that she was cancelling concerts scheduled for November and December – including a New Year’s Eve performance in Los Angeles – due to illness.
Natalie Cole started singing seriously in college, performing in small clubs. Treatment for that disease led to the deterioration of her kidneys and she frequently needed dialysis in the last few years of her life. And I think it was about the trials and tribulations that she was going through at the time.

After the huge success of the break-through single, “This Will Be”, she went on to have five hit singles, three gold albums, three Grammy awards and a Rock Award in the space of just two years – a remarkable achievement.
In 2000, Cole released an autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder, which chronicled her abuse of heroin and crack cocaine. Unforgettable won six Grammys, including Album of the Year.
Even then, despite her struggles, she was a determined performer. She was incredible. When Natalie performed in Vegas, she would sing along to a video of Nat singing “Unforgettable” – that’s where the idea came from – so when we got the tape we knew what we were going to do. Cole has one son, Robert Adam “Robbie” Yancy from her first marriage to Marvin Yancy. By May 2009, she received a kidney transplant, as a result of the organ’s failure.
“Her life was not an easy one, but she managed to face the challenges that plagued her earlier success and emerged out of these difficulties as a greater musician and more enduring star”.
