Iranian Navy Fires Rockets Near US Carrier
Commodore Kyle Raines, a US Central Command spokesman, said in a statement that Iranian Revolutionary Guard naval vessels fired “several unguided rockets” about 1,370 meters from the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier, the USS Bulkeley destroyer and a French frigate, the FS Provence.

“The Guards naval force had no exercise in the past week when the Americans claim that a missile or rocket was sacked in the Hormuz Strait area”, spokesman General Ramezan Sharif said.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital passage area for military and commercial shipping as it provides an entry point into the Arabian Gulf; the narrow waterway is heavily trafficked by oil shipments and commercial boats.
NBC News first reported news of the missile test.
According to the USA, the Iranian ships were conducting a live-fire exercise within about 1400 kilometers from the Harry Truman aircraft carrier.
This incident takes place within a significant broader U.S.- Iranian context because the much-discussed nuclear deal between the two countries took a major step forward recently.
A senior US official told the AP on Wednesday that America is considering designating a number of additional targets for sanctions related to Iran’s ballistic missile program.
Stephens said that Iranian forces suddenly announced a “live-fire exercise” Saturday before firing the rockets 23 minutes later, from within internationally recognized maritime traffic lanes and within the territorial waters of Oman, he said.
Hardliners in Iran have carried out a wave of arrests of activists they accuse of promoting Western “infiltration”, while the United States passed a law restricting visa-free travel rights for people who have visited Iran or hold dual Iranian nationality, a measure Iran has called a breach of the deal.
Iran denied that its Revolutionary Guards launched rockets near a USA aircraft carrier in the Gulf and condemned US plans for new sanctions over its ballistic missile programme.
“The publication of such false news under the current conditions is more of a psychological warfare and questionable”, Sharif said.
Iranian state television aired in October unprecedented footage of such an underground missile base.

They also put in jeopardy a landmark deal struck in July between Iran and six world powers including the USA, which is due to be formally implemented within weeks.
