Alabama, Clemson advance to national title game
The Tigers and Crimson Tide won their semifinal contests in the College Football Playoff, setting up a title bout in the January 11 national championship game in Glendale, Arizona. Alabama routed Michigan State 38-0 in a game that was pretty much over midway through the third quarter. But after that it became clear Oklahoma wasn’t in Clemson’s league, physically or otherwise. Punter Andy Teasdall flipped a 31-yard pass to Christian Wilkins, a 315-pound freshman defensive tackle.

The Clemson Tigers aren’t necessarily the Rodney Dangerfields of college football, but one assistant coach said the team is still trying to gain respect. The Sooners (11-2) matched their lowest-scoring game of the season as Baker Mayfield was sacked five times and intercepted twice, finally getting knocked out of the game when he took a blow to the head trying to make a tackle after his second pick.

The 2008 season opener between these two was supposed to be a nail-biter featuring a Top 10 Clemson team finally living up to expectations against an inexperienced Alabama squad hoping to find its identity in Nick Saban’s second season. This is year two of that deal.
Now, he’s got the Tigers within one win of their first national title since 1981.
There were plenty of outside distractions and detractors – trash talk from Oklahoma was prevalent throughout the week, and even former West Virginia players were using social media to pile on after Oklahoma’s touchdown on the game’s first drive.
The semifinals rotate through six bowl games – the Sugar, Rose, Cotton, Orange, Fiesta and Peach.
Watson certainly lived up to the hype of being a Heisman finalist, accounting for 332 yards and earning the offensive MVP award.
“I felt like Clemson was as good or equal before going into the football game, so I knew there was going to be a good bit of scoring”, Ford said. Coker, who rode the bench most of last season, remembered it well, according to Ridley, and had one message for his offense in the huddle Thursday.
Of course, Alabama’s utter demolition of Michigan State – the Spartans rushed for 29 yards – suggests a team that is playing on another level.
“I know people were probably thinking, oh, no, no, he’s not doing it again”, Wilkins said.
Defensive coordinator Brent Venables thought the key to his group’s success was shutting down Oklahoma’s running attack, something that could be key against an Alabama team that features the nation’s best running back in Derrick Henry. Responding to the challenge early, Samaje Perine burst through the first line of defense on the third play from the line of scrimmage gaining 17 yards on the ground. Oklahoma’s first possession was the exact opposite: three straight yards-losing plays forced the Sooners to punt, setting the tone for the struggles they would face the rest of the game.

“Clemson is a great team, undefeated, a great program”, Saban said. It’s a great opportunity for them. “My gosh, they got to print a 15th ticket to see the Tigers now”.
