Black Lives Matter Protest At Airport And Mall Of America; 4 Arrested

The Black Lives Matter movement is assuring that it’s not business as usual this holiday season amid police violence that continues take the lives of African-Americans. Their Facebook post says they’re also protesting the practices of airport police, who they say use racial profiling to discriminate against black people and those perceived to be Muslim.

Black Lives Matter protestors disrupted air and highway travel and retail activity two days before Christmas as a way to raise awareness to issues including the death of Jamar Clark, who was fatally shot after a confrontation with Minneapolis police officers last month.

According to the Star Tribune, organizers from Black Lives Matter Minneapolis had announced they would be protesting at the mall during one of the busiest times of the year, but what they didn’t tell everyone was that wasn’t their main plan.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis called its appearance at the Mall of America a planned diversion in advance of its airport demonstration.

The governor questioned the need for such a demonstration, noting the ongoing federal and state investigations into the death of Jamar Clark, who was shot by Minneapolis police responding to an assault complaint. “Currently, protest organizers direct acts of civil disobedience without assuming any responsibility for the consequences”.

Images of the mall on social media showed officers in riot gear approaching the crowd and signs warning the demonstrators to exit or get cuffed.

Police said it was an “unauthorised demonstration” and at one point described the situation as “very, very dangerous”.

He said that he “remains sympathetic to the goals of Black Lives Matter”, but a judge Tuesday ruled a protest in the private mall is against the law.

Bloomington police and State Patrol troopers closed off much of the mall to protesters, the Pioneer Press reports, with security officers also blocking access to parking ramps and some entrances.

Their right to peacefully demonstrate, whether at Rockefeller Center, the United Nations or the Mall of America, should not be restrained. The mall went on lockdown, police ushered everyone out and protesters headed to the Minneapolis-St. Police said that arrest was for an unrelated warrant.

Kandace Montgomery, one of three organizers barred by the judge’s order, said the group wasn’t deterred. There were a couple of flights that were delayed out of the airport because of the protest, said Patrick Hogan, airport spokesman.
