For the late soul and jazz diva Natalie Cole, who died on Thursday at the age of 65, her mortality was weighing on her mind as far back as 2012.
Popular American singer, songwriter and performer Natalie Maria Cole is no more with us.
Another father-daughter duet, “When I Fall in Love”, won a 1996 Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals, and a follow-up album, “Still Unforgettable”, won for best traditional pop vocal album of 2008. “Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever”. Even though Cole was able to beat her drug habit and stayed clean for the last thirty-plus years of her life, she did have residual illnesses from her time using cocaine and other substances. I’ve also had the pleasure of Interpreting a few songs originally done by her. A big thrill for me was hearing her tell me she enjoyed my version of “Inseparable” and more recently I covered “LaCosta” so long before we were friends I was a fan. Natalie Cole took no prisoners in the studio or on stage. I pray that precious memories of her, filled with joy and laughter soon overshadow the pain of their loss.
COLE: It was very, very difficult, very hard for me, because I’d never had the chance to really spend time working with him.
January 1, 2016 Just received the news that Natalie Cole has passed! May she rest in peace.
The family’s statement said Cole died at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles from “ongoing health issues”. In 1976, Cole performed a short self-titled concert special at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theater from November 23-November 28. And then she herself became this star in the 1970s, but in R&B.
Inspired by her dad at an early age, she began her career as an R&B singer. She was arrested on heroin possession charges in 1975 and sought treatment for drug addiction in the ’80s. Lovely song bird (and great actress too) – she is now singing in heaven.’ – Marlee Matlin.
Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich remembered Cole as having “one of those magical voices that grabbed you from the first note”. She entered rehab in 1983.
Hits and awards kept pouring in as Cole released two more platinum albums (Unpredictable and Thankful, both in 1977).
Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has joined the world in paying tribute to Natalie Cole, describing her as a sister to South Africa and the liberation struggle.
She was reportedly addicted to drugs and suffered from hepatitis C eight years ago.
She underwent a kidney transplant in 2009, which inspired her second book. Right now, however, they’re mostly singing how much she’ll be missed. LaBelle says to EURweb, “We lost a great one”.

“I think that I am a walking testimony to you can have scars”, she told People magazine. The “Unforgettable” duet was a smash hit, winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammys that year.
