Free Basics, which Facebook is promoting with double-page newspaper advertisements for days as also through TV, billboards and online forums, is being seen in many quarters as being against the basic principles of Net Neutrality.

Zuckerberg’s argument for free Web access is based in part on Deloitte research showing that for every 10 people who are connected to the Web, one is lifted out of poverty and one job is created.

In the past week, Facebook has urged users in India to send a response to the TRAI both through its social networking platform and through mobiles by dialling a number that automatically generates a response on the users behalf.

“Instead of recognising that Free Basics fully respects net neutrality, they claim – falsely – the exact opposite”.

IAMAI said as per Trai’s paper there are three different models identified that have differential pricing for data or Internet services.

The industry body, in its submission, agreed that there was an urgent need to connect the millions of unconnected people in India and narrow the digital and developmental divide. Zuckerberg has said that there aren’t any ads in the version of Facebook included in Free Basics.

Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t understand how anyone could oppose his Free Basics Internet service.

The deadline for comments on the paper ended on Wednesday.

We have already extended the last date for sending comments by a week to January 7.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) sources said all the comments should reach the regulator with Jan 7 and the regulator will come out with counter-comments by Jan 14.
