Louis Van Gaal’s risky decision paid off for Manchester United against Swansea
He surpassed former-United striker Andrew Cole as the second highest goalscorer in Premier League history with 188 goals in his 12 years in England’s top division.

Anthony Martial sent United in front shortly after half-time, before Gylfi Sigurdsson headed a leveller for Swansea, who were looking to claim a fourth consecutive victory over the Old Trafford club.
Manchester United have now gone eight games without victory in all competitions, their worst run since January 1990 (also eight games).
After a first half that saw both squads scoreless, it was classic Manchester United in the Sir Alex Ferguson era, with the Red Devils climbing back on top with a second half victor.
“We’ve had many games like that”, said Van Gaal, who has also twice coached the Dutch national team.
“I hope this is a fantastic starting point for us”, he said.
Hernandez has found form this season following his move to Bayer Leverkusen, picking up the last two Bundesliga Player of the Month awards and firing 19 goals in 22 appearances since his £12m switch.
“I was always taught as a youngster that if you keep a clean sheet you’ve got a great chance of winning the game and we’ve done that more often than not this season”, he added.
Jones was replaced by Darmian at the break and again United came out of the blocks quickly, this time getting the opening goal as Young crossed from the right, after excellent work from Bastian Schweinsteiger, for Martial to head home.
“You can not predict (what effect a win will have)”.
He said: “In the first half we played with three defenders, a risky shape, a risky system”.
As they had done against Chelsea in their previous home stalemate, United tried to show more attacking intent from the start with van Gaal employing a three-man defence and Ashley Young and Anthony Martial as wing-backs in a bid to set up a first home win since November. I was playing further up than I have in the last few weeks. “We are sitting on the bench in a more relaxed way”.
“They have to give everything and that’s the most hard aspect of players’ function. It has nothing to do with the fact I left him out – that’s because he has played every game and sometimes he also needs rest”. The goal that beat Swansea keeper, Lukasz Fabianski, was a brilliant flick from the United captain in the 77th minute.
The match may have ended scoreless, but United put on a thrilling attacking display in the first half and deserved three points.
