Howard also tossed a Cactus Bowl-record five touchdowns and his 555 total offensive yards were also a bowl record.
The junior broke the Cactus Bowl record of 476 yards set by Washington State’s Drew Bledsoe against Utah in 1992, and blew past the school bowl record of 429 yards set by Marc Bulger against Missouri in Tucson in 1998. He threw two interceptions.
The air-raid attack continued for WVU on its next drive as Howard connected with Gary Jennings for a 64-yard scoring play to re-gain the lead, 29-25.
Kansas State: The Wildcats lost at home for the first time this season after an 8-0 start….
The Sun Devils moved quickly for a 2-yard TD pass from Bercovici to White.
It’s the first bowl win for West Virginia since the 2012 Orange Bowl where the Mountaineers beat Clemson 70-33.
Howard completed a 21-yard pass over the middle of the field to Ka’Raun White.
White caught a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter from quarterback Mike Bercovici, with each giving ASU the lead. The West Virginia Mountaineers are shooting 31.3 percent from beyond the arc and 66 percent from the free throw line. West Virginia will likely have trouble running the ball which will make them one dimensional and likely take away some of their big play ability. @WVUfootball has 532 passing yards, breaking a 24-year old #CactusBowl record. This time it was a 59-yard touchdown catch from Shelton Gibson on a play where the West Virginia receiver was wide open down the sideline.
Through the first 12-minutes of the first quarter the Mountaineers had rolled up 204 yards compared to 14 for the Sun Devils but had only three field goals to show for it.
Chambers scored the go-ahead touchdown with just under 5 minutes left when West Virginia safety Dravon Askew-Henry slipped, but the failure to go for 2 came back to haunt the Sun Devils. However, the Sun Devils could not muster a first down and Zane Gonzalez nailed a 37-yard FG to put ASU on the board.
The Sun Devils and WVU battled back-and-forth much of the night. While the offenses haven’t been consistent, they’ve run a lot of plays.
West Virginia’s Wendell Smallwood (4) runs the ball in the fourth quarter against the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Cactus Bowl at Chase Field. The Mountaineers outgained ASU, 238-42 in the first quarter but led just 9-3 after watching three drives stall inside ASU’s 15-yard line. He managed only seven points and five rebounds while finishing with more turnovers (three) than baskets (two).Carter scored six points, seven below his average. West Virginia’s depth will certainly come into play in this one, with today’s contest requiring a ton of energy.
With WVU leading 22-13 and trying for the point-after, a blocked kick was recovered by redshirt junior wide receiver Tim White, who returned it for a defensive PAT.

The drive stretched 66 yards in eight plays to put the Pac 12 program back into the lead. After an bad possession by West Virginia that resulted in Tarik Phillip throwing the ball off the side of the backboard, the game stalled. West Virginia had outgained ASU 142-0 at one point during the half.
