The most controversial aspect this year, however, involved so-called “wenches” from Finnegan New Year’s Brigade centering their act around Caitlyn Jenner, where a man dressed as Bruce Jenner drops into a wheelchair and changes into a woman’s costume while Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like a Lady” played.
Philadelphia police and Mayor Michael Nutter’s office didn’t immediately respond to phone calls and emails Saturday, but Mayor-elect Jim Kenney weighed in. A man with that group was seen shouting expletives about gays in a video shot by New York Daily News editor Nick Kurczewski, Philly.com reported Saturday.
Signed: Mike Inemer, Finnegan New Year BrigadeEarlier in the day, the club sent out a tweet stating the man is a “bad apple” and has been dealt with “in house”.
Other groups caught some flack as well for insensitive acts, including Sammar Strutters” “Siesta Fiesta’ act, which had comics donning brown face and dressed in sombreros and ponchos.
In another incident, a spectator filmed one of the parade’s members screaming “Fuck the gays!” ‘Hurtful to many Philadelphians. According to The Root, the 116-year-old event ‘was created by Scandinavian, European, and.African immigrants in the mid-17th century based on the tradition of “mummers”, a German word meaning “to costume or masquerade”‘.
He told the Philadelphia Daily News the men, who punched him in the face also called him a “f–t”. Kenney says, “Our Trans Citizens do not deserve this type of satire/insult”. Holtz claims four members of the group verbally and physically assaulted him.
“They start giving me some kind of crap, because I’m a big guy and I have this little fluffy dog”, Holtz said to NBC 10. “You’re a faggot.’ He was digging at me”.
Officers offered to take a report, but Holtz declined because he didn’t want to ruin the rest of the day at the police station, he said. As of this time, he is no longer considered a Mummer.
Adding to the racially charged displays, some people in the parade dressed as wenches and pirates held up signs that said “PIRATES LIVES MATTER” and “WENCHES LIVES MATTER”, while actual members of Black Lives Matter protested down the block.
Police say two people were arrested during the protest.

According to NBC10, this year the city tried to increase diversity at the parade with a new group called the Philadelphia division, which included representatives from the city’s Latino, black and LGBT communities.
