Too Much Sitting Linked To Cancer Risk

A high proportion of overweight women belonged to the group of survivors with a family history of breast cancer or inherited gene mutations linked to the disease. BReast-CAncer susceptibility gene-1 and BReast-CAncer susceptibility gene-2 respond to DNA damage by DNA fix and regulation of transcription, according to a study published in NCBI. All women were disease-free, nonsmokers and were not taking hormone replacement therapy. So, by melting away fat, exercise should cut a woman’s odds of developing the disease. “Moreover, body fat, abdominal fat, and adult weight gain increase the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer”. The results suggest the possibility of lowering risk for postmenopausal breast cancer.

Canadian researchers found postmenopausal women who exercised at least 300 minutes per week were more successful at reducing total body fat compared to those who exercised for half the time.

Research shows older women are at increased risk and less than half the women over 70 could name a symptom of breast cancer other than a lump.

After one year women exercising 300 minutes per week had bigger reductions in abdominal fat, body mass index, and waist circumference.

Christine Friedenreich, scientific leader of cancer epidemiology and prevention research at Alberta Health Services, and her colleagues had identified body fat as a possible pathway to lowering cancer risk.

Since 2012, oncologic guidelines in the Netherlands have advised doctors to follow an individualized approach in which the risk of cancer recurrence in a specific patient determines the follow-up course of action.

Lead researcher Dr Jessica Friedenreich said: ‘Postmenopausal women may derive unique benefit from exercise because there is a tendency for weight gain and abdominal weight gain after the menopause.
