Armed protesters gather at wildlife refuge
A small group of armed men occupied the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns, Oregon, on Saturday. The newspaper notes the land is remote and no federal agents are in danger. Both are due to report to prison on Monday.

According to AP, Dwight, and his son Steven, said that they lit fires to control spread of invasive plant species and protect their land from wildfires, but the fires spread to federal property.
Federal lawyers prosecuted the Hammonds under an anti-terrorism law that required a five-year minimum sentence, though they have declined to say why. The father and son were convicted of arson after setting fire to 127 acres of land in 2001, and already served some jail time before a judge ordered them back to jail to complete their five-year sentence.
Ammon Bundy and a handful of militiamen from other states arrived last month in Burns, some 60 miles from the Hammond ranch. They said they were not looking to hurt anyone, but in a phone interview Ryan Bundy told The Oregonian protesters were willing to kill or be killed, if necessary.
“It’s extra. They’ll probably enjoy it. That’s what we do here”, said Ron Gainer.
Cliven Bundy, the patriarch of a large Mormon family with more than 50 grandchildren, came into the spotlight in April 2014, when the federal government started impounding his 900 head of cattle, following a 20-year battle over cattle-grazing on federal land.
73, and Steven Dwight Hammond, 46, his son, are scheduled to report to jail on Monday, and will do so willingly. The initial part of the protest was a march to the courthouse where the protesters threw pennies at the locked door, symbolizing their attempt to “buy back their government” according to the Associated Press.
After the protest in Burns, Bundy’s group seized the headquarters of the Malheur wildlife refuge, which is located about 30 miles southeast of town. “This is not a decision we’ve made at the last minute”.
Meanwhile, Cliven’s son Ammon is reportedly rallying other militia members to join the occupation.
Not all local residents have welcomed the outside groups, fearing for the potential of violence.
It’s unclear if the militia members camped out at the Malheur building are armed.
“I can tell you that I got a standing ovation from that crowd…”
Another resident, Candy Tiller, told OPB, “I’m anxious that there’s a trigger-happy idiot out there”. During that standoff, armed protesters pointed weapons at law enforcement. It worries me. It brings me to tears. “I want to die a free man”. “I don’t want that for anybody”.
Even more attention has gone to the protesters’ actions after the demonstration in Burns.
“You stop and look at the Hammond family and what the BLM has done to them”, Hicks said, shaking his head.
Yet it is unclear to what extent the local people in OR welcome the presence of the Bundys.
He also shamed the Harney County sheriff for not protecting the Hammonds.
Two of Ammon Bundy’s brothers are also among the occupiers, according to The Oregonian. They have called on “patriots” to join them in the fight against the “tyranny” of the federal government.
“I’m just trying to, as I’ve always tried to stay within the law”, he said. I have a lot of anxiety.

“People need to be aware that we’ve become a system where government is actually claiming and using and defending people’s rights, and they are doing that against the people”. She made no further comment.
