Van Gal glad Man United started 2016 with victory
Swansea had won the last three meetings against United by a 2-1 scoreline but the hosts soon restored their lead as Martial burst away down the left and Rooney turned in his low cross with a clever flick.

Saturday’s 2-1 win over Swansea could be a “fantastic starting point” for Manchester United to build on in 2016, according to manager Louis van Gaal.
Strike partner Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney were the heroes as the pair both scored in the second half of what was a 45 minute game after a poor first half.
Rooney and Martial had been struggling for form ahead of the Swansea tie: Rooney had not scored in the Premier League since Oct 17, while the Frenchman had found the target just once in domestic competition since September.
United, whose 0-0 draw against Chelsea last Monday meant that they had failed to score in five of their previous eight home games, produced an improved performance.
“They were two very well-worked goals and to see your two strikers get on the scoresheet, hopefully with the number of chances that we create it’s only a matter of time until these goals start coming and fingers crossed they’ll start coming now”.
“It’s unbelievable when you give four minutes’ stoppage time – it’s a lot, especially when they were wasting time, not us”.
Arsenal dispensed with its typically silky football and toughed out a 1-0 win over Newcastle, through a goal from defender Laurent Koscielny, to move two points clear at the top.
Jones was on Saturday replaced with Matteo Darmian at half-time while Paddy McNair came in for Young in the second half.
Louis van Gaal couldn’t resist a sly dig at Swansea following Manchester United’s victory at Old Trafford yesterday. “You can not imagine what a goal that is”.
“They have showed it this season many times, but now the situation is different”.
“Then we are sitting on the bench in a more easy, relaxed way”. That is why I am proud they can do it under this pressure.
“I communicate everything with the players”.
“I hope this is a fantastic starting point for us in the New Year and we can continue against Sheffield United”. He’s under a lot of pressure but you can see right from the off he’s not afraid to get at players and use his pace and tricks.
