India Likely to Hold Talks With Pakistan Despite Air Base Attack
Some 29 hours after gunmen entered the Pathankot air base in the northwestern state of Punjab, firing indiscriminately, confusion reigned over whether two or more militants were still at large after four were confirmed killed on Saturday evening.

Four attackers have already been killed and the country’s home secretary said he hoped the remaining two would be “neutralised” overnight.
The Pathankot air base houses dozens of jet fighters and is important for its strategic location about 50 kilometres from the Pakistan border.
A gunfight started again on Sunday morning during search and combing operations after it was found that one to two terrorists could still be holed up inside the base.
Officials then confirmed the operation was ongoing, more than 36 hours after the base was first attacked.
“Whoever is finally identified, it will be the same Pakistan-based terror formations and these have long experience of attacking military and police establishments”, said Ajay Sahni, the head of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi.
The sources said the terrorists had used the auto of the Superintendent of Police of Gurdaspur, which men in army fatigues had hijacked in Pathankot on Friday after assaulting him and snatching away his mobile phone.
The initiative got momentum after the talks between Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and government leaders in Pakistan which were followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s short visit to Lahore. Spokesman at the Foreign Office while condemning the attack said that “many precious lives have been lost and Pakistan extends heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India and the bereaved families and wish the wounded speedy and full recovery”.
He said the terrorists, while running, fired at the DSC (Defence Service Corps) mess where early morning breakfast was being prepared. At least four gunmen entered an Indian air force…
According to reports, 10 Indian military personnel died in yesterday’s attack.
They want to know how the suspected Pakistani terrorists, numbering five, could easily make it to the frontier IAF base despite intelligence inputs that they were going to target a high profile defence target in the area.
Next, foreign secretary level talks are scheduled in Islamabad on January 14-15, and there India must put pressure on Pakistan to show that it’s serious about preventing such attacks in the future.
Punjab, along with the disputed region of Kashmir, shares a border with Pakistan.
“NSG team has also teamed up with them to foil the terrorist plans; local Brigade Commander of Army is coordinating the operations; in addition UAVs of the army and IAF have also been put into action to get inputs” the spokesperson added.
Officials said they are still trying to identify the attackers.
