Another Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the government follows zero tolerance policy on terrorism and was committed to national security and would befittingly respond to any terrorist attack.
Police were investigating whether the militants came from the Indian portion of Kashmir or from Pakistan.
So far, the death toll of the martyred in the Pathankot Air Force Base attack has risen to seven.
Official said the terrorists were unable to enter the area where MiG-21 fighter aircraft, attack helicopters and other military hardware are kept.
By late morning it appeared that the violence had ended with the killing of the gunmen by Indian forces.
A fierce gunfight between the terrorists, believed to be from Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), and security forces had continued through Saturday after the terrorists entered the IAF base, located around 250 km from Chandigarh.
The attack occurred days after Narendra Modi visited Pakistan and met his counterpart Nawaz Sharif.
The visit was seen as a potential sign of thawing relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
It is also to increase tension between the two nations so that the upcoming foreign secretary-level talks get cancelled, sources said.
Indian troops killed four gunmen who had entered an Indian air force base near the border with Pakistan and exchanged fire with security forces on Saturday, officials and news reports said.
The IAF, in a statement in New Delhi, said the terrorists’ plan to destroy “valuable assets” was “foiled” due to “effective preparations” and “coordinated efforts”.
The Himalayan region of Kashmir, where rebels have been fighting since 1989 for independence or merger with Pakistan, is divided between India and Pakistan, but is claimed in its entirety by both.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and training Kashmir’s insurgents, a charge Islamabad denies. “We are against talks with Pakistan. The country is proud of them”, Rajnath said.
“We urge all countries in the region to work together to disrupt and dismantle terrorist networks and to bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous act”, Kirby said.

In July, gunmen staged a similar attack at a police station and a bus near Gurdaspur, a border town in India’s Punjab state. As security forces on the ground engaged the terrorists, attack helicopters, hovered overhead, fired inside the base.
