On his Twitter account, Morelos governor Graco Ramirez attributed Mota’s killing to organised crime, without citing any particular drug cartel or gang.

“The government of the State of Morelos states categorically that we will not compromise or give a single step back in building a secure entity, in peace and harmony”, the statement said.

On Sunday, the Mexican news website SinEmbargo reported that one of three suspects detained after the shooting told authorities that the perpetrators were paid 500,000 Mexican pesos – about $29,000 – to kill Mota. Attorney General Javier Perez Duron said they had been tied to other crimes.

“Police killed two suspects after the murder of Temixco Mayor Gisela Mota”.

“This is a challenge by organized crime against the constitutional and democratic order”, Ramírez said on Sunday morning.

In a statement, the PRD remembered Mota as a “strong and fearless woman” who vowed to be “frontal and direct” in her fight against organized crime.

The city of Temixco is home to about 100,000 people and lies just south of Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos, towards the border with the particularly violent state of Guerrero. Last year, several mayors were killed by “armed gangs financed by the by the drugs trade control many local communities”, writes Telesurtv. The city of Temixco is plagued by the activities which are alleged to originate in neighboring Cuernavaca. A few years back, a 14-year-old assassin for a drug cartel from the city caught the world’s attention for his on camera descriptions of the murders he had committed.
