Peyton Manning both transcendent and throwback
But they’re 11-4. And the other top teams in the AFC, including the Bengals and New England Patriots, have their own questions and problems to deal with.

The Broncos still have plenty to play for with a first-round bye up for grabs. Interception. This time, the damage was done too deep in Denver’s territory for the defense to totally make up for it, and the Chargers kicked a 42-yard field goal. This is going to be a game where the Broncos have to figure out how to win when they’re not at their best.
Despite 55% of National Football League public bettors now backing San Diego to cover the spread, oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI list Denver as double-digit favorites at -10.
Not everything is flawless in the Mile High city though. “My dad went to Notre Dame so I watched them as a kid”. Manning was diagnosed with a foot injury shortly after that and Osweiler was named the team’s starting quarterback. Who should start in the playoffs for Denver?
Osweiler is 3-2 in his five starts in place of Manning, but the record doesn’t necessarily paint the entire picture.
New England still has a first-round bye and at least one playoff game at Foxborough. That is both a knock on Osweiler and a reason for optimism regarding his play. McManus was good again, and the Broncos tied it up 20-20.
Rivers, for one, was surprised to see Osweiler get the hook. The most historic meeting between these two teams was on January 12, 2014, when the Broncos defeated San Diego 24-17 in the divisional playoffs en route to an appearance in Super Bowl XLVIII.
Even the Monday Night game a few nights ago is an example of Osweiler’s inconsistency at times. He looked uncomfortable and out of whack, and with 14 interceptions in a six-game span dating back to Week 4, it became evident he was doing more harm than good under center.
The Chargers have lost three of their last four games but they’ve covered three straight spreads heading into today’s game. “As far as my personal injuries, I feel great and I’m very excited to go play this Sunday”. “Let’s make this be their last home game, ‘” Chargers QB Philip Rivers said. Manning entered the game to a loud ovation within the 3rd quarter with the Broncos trailing the Chargers 13-7.
The 25-year-old Osweiler isn’t a franchise quarterback, but he’s been healthy and mildly effective.
The boot leg and stretch run plays are a staple of Kubiak’s offense and Osweiler has the ability to get out of the pocket on both of those plays. “His footprint was bigger than just the cities he played in”. By saying “Nothing has changed”, Kubiak has done Manning a solid by not having to admit that he demoted him.
What happened: Osweiler, making his seventh career start, didn’t see blitzer Williams, who belted him from behind. Whatever I can do to help the team get a win against the Chargers, that’s kind of where the focus is.
CLOSING CHAPTERS: This will be the end of a miserable season for the Chargers, who haven’t beaten a team with a winning record and have gone more than a year without beating an AFC West rival.
Manning said it’s been a frustrating month and a-half and returning to the football field “sure beats being in the indoors by yourself and being in street clothes” on game day. “But I didn’t think he would die at 27”.

There are so many potential milestones happening in this one that it’s easy to forget that, from a purely wins-losses perspective, this game means nearly nothing.
