Odd-even policy: Delhi public transport faces test on working day
Delhi Government’s ambitious odd-even vehicle scheme to curb pollution in the national capital will face its real test on a full-fledged working day on Monday. The minister said the carrying capacity of buses and Metro have been increased by 32 per cent and 20 per cent respectively from today.

At places such as Rajendra Nagar in North Delhi and in Central Delhi’s Connaught Place, volunteers from the Civil Defence force were seen assisting the police with directing traffic and noting down the vehicle numbers of violators. On January 4, only even-number cars were allowed to ply on Delhi roads, apart from exempted vehicles such as those running on CNG or driven by single women drivers.
Yesterday, 203 people were challaned for the violation of norms in the odd-even scheme.
The restrictive measures which is followed by most of the European countries is aimed to curb pollution in Delhi. Those caught violating the scheme have to pay a penalty of Rs 2,000. Earlier in the day, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the AAP government had launched the odd-even plan despite apprehensions that the move may have an adverse impact on the party’s vote bank.
On Friday alone, 200 errant motorists were fine by Delhi’s traffic and transport department including former Mumbai top cop and Member of Parliament was fined on Friday afternoon for using Even number vehicle on Odd day.

Gopal Rai, who is Delhi’s Transport Minister, on Sunday held a meeting with senior officers from the city’s Traffic Police, Delhi Police, civil defence forces, Metro officials and other agencies. The tourist minister is travelling to work by bus. “This itself is an indication that the mindset of people for environment is changing and I salute all Delhiites for this two days’ success”, Rai added.
