A day after he was charged with sexual assault, Bill Cosby’s lawyers launched a campaign Thursday to portray the charge against him as false and politically motivated.

“Friends and fans, Thank you”, the message read.

It was the first original tweet sent by Cosby since August, when he posted a link to his attorney Monique Pressley – who vowed on Wednesday to clear his name – denying sexual assault allegations on his behalf. The charges stemmed from allegations brought by a woman who settled a civil case against Cosby in 2006.

“In a civil deposition he gave in 2005, Cosby admitted giving Constand “blue pills” in order “…to help take some of the stress and tension away”.

In 2005, Constand claimed that Cosby invited her to his home and that on one occasion in 2004 he gave her pills and wine, which made her unresponsive.

Steele won the November election.

He said possible charges are still pending with the district attorney’s office there, but the statute of limitations will run out in the spring.

That testimony became public this past summer, prompting new calls for charges against Cosby.
