Bastian Schweinsteiger hails Manchester United’s character following victory over Swansea City
Wayne Rooney was the hero at Old Trafford as he scored a lovely goal to secure a 2-1 win over Swansea.

It looked as though Louis van Gaal’s side would have to settle for a point at Old Trafford after Anthony Martial’s opening goal was cancelled out by Gylfi Sigurdsson with 20 minutes remaining.
It was also an edgy afternoon for Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, as they cemented their position at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win against Newcastle thanks to a Laurent Koscielny.
And on the victory and how the side players, Van Gaal said as reported by manutd.com: “We’ve started the new year very well”.
The clever back-heel finish was Rooney’s 188th Premier League goal, taking him past former United striker Andy Cole and into second place behind Alan Shearer.
Swansea nearly had the last laugh when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski came close to a stunning headed equaliser, but van Gaal said: “Ashley Young has played a lot of matches in a row”.
Rooney also regained his appetite to run at defenders, and there was one moment before the break when his sublime cross-field 50-metre pass suggested that he still has it in him.
“It was his left foot behind his right foot”, Van Gaal said.
Jamie Carragher has suggested that Wayne Rooney is at the level of a player five years his senior due to “miles on the clock”.
After dominating the early stages, Van Gaal’s men allowed Swansea back into the match, with Morgan Schneiderlin surviving penalty claims for an alleged handball. “We need him and hopefully he will play a part to the end of the season for us”. If we had kept all of the strikers, the pressure is from the others, (to see) who is playing, who is sitting on the bench.
Swansea was causing problems down United’s left, where halftime substitute Matteo Darmian was being overrun, and the goal came from that flank.
Swansea were quite content to sit back and soak up the pressure, with the hope of catching them on the counter with the pace of Andre Ayew and Wayne Routledge.
“Also against Chelsea we played very risky because we want to press”. That’s the reason – it’s not that we want to play risky football. The Dutchman has been criticised for playing a style that curbs the attacking instincts of his players and it seems like the manager is switching to a more attacking style of play, which is clearly paying dividends.
After a goalless first half, Anthony Martial put United ahead in the 47th minute when he clinically headed home from Ashley Young’s cross.
“We can not allow the gap to grow”, said the United boss, who has lost all three of his matches against Swansea.

“I hope it shall give him the boost he needs to continue his good form”.
