Sonia becomes emotional at institute named after Rajiv
In a thinly veiled attack on the BJP for its efforts to cobble together an alliance with the party floated by SNDP yogam, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said communal forces were betraying the dreams and ideals of Sree Narayana Guru.

“Sadly caste discrimination still exists and we still have much work to do in the area. But he persevered with it and today, yesterday’s critics have now taken over the legacy of his”, Gandhi said.
She said that the Guru’s principles of equality, liberty and social justice are more relevant today than ever before.
The comments by Sonia during her visit to the Sivagiri mutt here in poll-bound southern-Indian state of Kerala came close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the mutt on December 15 to pay homage to Narayana Guru.
The Congress president further said that Sree Narayana Guru convened the first religious parliament of century in Asia, which was attended by leaders from all religions in Aluva in February 1924. Ezhava community is the single biggest Hindu community in the state constituting 20 per cent of the population in the state.
Kollam: SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Thursday said that it was not Congress president Sonia Gandhi who should be blamed for making a political speech at Sivagiri but those who prompted her to do so.
Wooing the numerically-strong backward Ezhava community, she said the Guru was an “architect of spirituality and social reforms to whom spirituality means service of the poor and weaker and welfare of all humanity”.
Over the years, factionalism has bothered the Congress party in the state, and for one whole decade the feud between the majority faction led by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and state Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has at times caused embarrassment to the coalition.

Gandhi while dedicating to the nation the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology at Pambady in Kottayam district, also took a dig at the Left and other political parties which had opposed computerization in the country introduced by former Prime Minister and her husband late Rajiv Gandhi. An example of this is appointment of Sankar, an Ezhava leader, as chief minister by Congress in 1970, she said.
