The wrongly installed airbags were discovered by Ferrari while tests were being done on the steering column of the 458 Italia, according to documents that were uploaded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

When the airbag in the Italia deployed, it did so in what is described as a “rotated” orientation, which could potentially cause injuries to the driver.

The defect isn’t the same as in the Takata air bags that have exploded and sent shrapnel toward drivers and passengers.

No fatalities or injuries were reported in the documents Ferrari filed with the USA regulator.

Dealerships will replace the front driver’s side airbag module free of charge and the recall is expected to begin on July 30, 2015.

The defect affects 2,600 vehicles worldwide, Florin said. Ferrari also confirmed that a temporary suspension has been imposed on auto sales in the USA, in order to ensure that all affected vehicles are repaired before being sld.

The 458 Italia/Spider/Speciale/Speciale A, California T, FF, F12 Berlinetta, and LaFerrari made between December 19, 2014 and April 29, 2015 are being recalled.

The affected cars cost from US$200,000 to more than US$1.4 million approximately, suggesting an embarrassing mistake on Ferrari’s part.
