Obama set to hold town hall meeting on gun control
President Barack Obama said he’ll meet on Monday with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to discuss what executive actions he can take to restrain gun violence, focusing White House attention on the contentious issue in his previous year in office.

In his weekly radio address released Friday, Obama urged Americans to stand with him if they share his belief that the Second Amendment right to bear arms also leaves room for restrictions on gun ownership by “an irresponsible, risky few”. As Politico recently reported, this would close the so-called gun show loophole and require these sellers to conduct background checks.
Gun laws do not stop criminals, despite California having some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, already mandating universal background checks for all gun purchases; Syed Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik were able to legally obtain firearms and kill 14 people in San Bernardino on 2 December. Other moves being considered include improving reporting of lost and stolen weapons and beefing up inspections of licensed dealers, according to a person familiar with the plans who would not be named discussing proposals before they are finalized.
The proposal could expand background checks on gun sales, without congressional approval.
Mr. Obama will take part in a one-hour town hall-style question-and-answer session on gun control broadcast on CNN at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, the White House said.
“The president has made clear he’s not satisfied with where we are”, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said.
“I would prefer that we could have bipartisan support, but the truth is Republicans are not interested in doing anything about gun safety”, Mr. Sanders said on CNN’s “State of the Union”.
President Barack Obama is expected to announce new gun control curbs this week, but he will have to decide whether to take bold action that would likely spark a major legal challenge from opponents or a more cautious route that may be less effective, legal experts said.
He expressed particular support for background checks for gun shows and online sales.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, also on Fox, said Obama’s “first impulse is always to take rights away from law-abiding citizens, and it’s wrong”. “The fact is if he wants to make changes to these laws, go to Congress and convince the Congress they’re necessary”. “But this is going to be another illegal executive action which I’m sure will be rejected by the courts”.
And at a rally in Biloxi, Miss., on Saturday, real estate mogul Donald Trump promised that if Obama signs executive actions on guns, he would “unsign that so fast” once he becomes president.

But a number of Republican presidential candidates this weekend denounced Obama’s potential plans. Marco Rubio said at a campaign stop in New Hampshire Sunday morning.
