It came just about a week after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a surprise visit to Pakistan, the first by an Indian premier in 11 years.
The meeting was called at short notice, as it became clear that the Pathankot operations were not over and there were higher casualties among security forces.
Officials said the attack bore the hallmarks of previous suspected assaults by Pakistan-based militant groups, underscoring the fragility of recent efforts to revive bilateral talks between the often uneasy neighbours. Four other NSG personnel sustained injuries in this incident.
Seven soldiers including a senior officer and four attackers have so far been confirmed killed during the raid on the Pathankot base in the northern state of Punjab, near the border with Pakistan. The Indian Air Force narrated the bravado of one of the DSC jawan named Jagdish, who without a concern of personal safety, chased terrorists bare-handed.
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held a meeting with top officials late Friday night following the issuance of the security alert. Shots could also be heard from inside the base, according to AP.
Throughout the day choppers kept flying over the air force station to provide aerial support to the ground troops engaged in the operation against the terrorists. At that time, “it was not certain if there were other terrorists or not”.
He stated quickly after the operation was launched, Garud Commandos managed to interact one group of terrorists in a gun battle.
Home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi told reporters that four gunmen had been killed and the two militants who were still at large were expected to be “neutralised” soon.
Indian army soldiers head towards the Indian Air Force base at Pathankot. That contradicted earlier statements by home ministry and army officials who, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two holdouts had been killed. The fresh exchange of fire on Sunday and the grenade blast occurred as the joint combing operation by the armed forces, police and security personnel was still underway and the National Investigation Agency had taken over the probe.
“We don’t want him to show red eyes, but we want him to take firm action to protect the life of citizens of this country”, Surjewala said.
Mehrishi said that troops were not certain of the presence of additional gunmen until they were discovered Sunday afternoon, and that the two men were cornered in a wooded area of the base by the evening.
