Jets playoff hopes thwarted in 22-17 loss at Buffalo
It was a game that felt like Buffalo was just going to waltz into the sunset and the Jets were going to walk into the playoffs.

Fitzpatrick led the Jets on their longest drive of the game (11 plays, 77 yards, 3:52) and connected with Decker for a 21-yard touchdown that got the Jets within 19-17 with just over a minute left in the third quarter.
Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 16 of 37 passes for 181 yards, but threw three fourth-quarter interceptions in his first game in Buffalo since he was the Bills’ quarterback in 2012. The Jets fall to 10-6 and with a Pittsburgh win, miss out on the postseason.
The result, coupled with Pittsburgh’s 28-12 win over Cleveland, left both teams with 10-6 records, but the Steelers advanced on the tiebreaker.
“It’s the hardest, most difficult end to a season I’ve ever had”, Fitzpatrick said.
“I’m proud of everyone in that locker room right now, but it hurts”, Fitzpatrick said. And next year when we come to training camp and say, “Hey, we won our last game and we won two out of three divisions and swept our division”.
Brilliant Steelers receiver Antonio Brown finished with 187 yards on 13 grabs and he hauled in a 17-yard touchdown in the second quarter, before Markus Wheaton scored on an eight-yard catch in the fourth. “I know it was real emotional for me then”. He was the guy, when we were on that decline a little bit midseason that spoke up and brought the team together.
It was not hard to draw a parallel between this postgame performance and his season-long performance when, yes, he spent a lot of time doing nothing for the Bills defense.
PICKY, PICKY: The Fitzpatrick interception-parade began early in the fourth quarter when cornerback Leodis McKelvin stepped in front of a 14-yard pass intended for Eric Decker in the end zone.
The game was decided when Fitzpatrick’s side-arm pass over the middle was intercepted by A.J. Tarpley with 11 seconds remaining.
Ryan, who was sacked by the Jets last January after the four playoff-less seasons that followed his two AFC Championship game marches, was facing the detestable possibility of watching the Jets beat him and clinch a playoff berth in his home stadium before Bills fans who already had soured on him after only one season.
McKelvin on how satisfying it is to keep the Jets and Fitzpatrick, his former Bills teammate, from winning and going to the playoffs… But with Ryan’s help, the Steelers’ are one of two teams going into the AFC playoffs with what you would consider an elite signal caller. “If he can can give us a winning season next year I’m behind him”. And Ryan had grown irritable over the past few weeks after having his job security questioned and criticized for a defense that had underperformed for much of this year.
“I’ve got a lot of friends over there, and I want them to be successful”, the colorfully bombastic coach said.
The Jets’ loss to Buffalo on Nov 12 ended with Fitzpatrick being intercepted by safety Bacarri Rambo. What he did is even more impressive when you realize the Bills played without their best running back(LeSean McCoy) and top tight end(Charles Clay) which meant the Jets would know Watkins was the main guy to shut down.
Though the Bills missed the playoffs for the 16th straight season, Bills owner Terry Pegula issued a statement last week affirming his support for Ryan and general manager Doug Whaley after their talent-laden roster fell short of expectations. NY finished with 300 yards offense and converted just three of 11 third-down attempts.
First, Todd Bowles’ defense forced a turnover on Buffalo’s first possession of the second half that his team turned into a field goal. Uncharacteristically, New York got crushed in the time of possession battle, holding on to the ball for only 20 minutes and 47 seconds.
