The Phillies called up Nola from Triple A Lehigh Valley on Friday and announced he will start Tuesday night vs. the Tampa Bay Rays at Citizens Bank Park.

The Aaron Nola era has arrived in Philadelphia.

In the first game out of the All-Star break, Nola lasted just three-plus innings at Rochester – the second-shortest start of his pro career – allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. He was promoted to Triple-A Lehigh where he went 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six starts, striking out 33 in 32 2/3 innings while walking just nine.

There is actually some good news about the Phillies: Another promising minor leaguer is about to make his major league debut.

Drafted in the 22nd round out of high school, Nola turned down the Blue Jays’ contract offer and played three seasons at Louisiana State University. Nola is. And the hope is that last year’s 7th overall pick in the draft can help make Phillies baseball somewhat watchable again, at least every fifth day or so, in the second half of the season.

Nola is the first Phillies draft pick to make his major league debut the season following his selection since Pat Combs, who made his debut as a call-up in September of 1989.

Nola will wear No. 27. He finished out the 2014 season at double-A Reading, where he went 2-0 in 5 starts with a 2.62 ERA.

It was expected at some point this season right-hander Aaron Nola, one of the Phillies’ top prospects, would reach the big leagues. BA said Nola is the Phils’ No. 2 prospect, behind J.P. Crawford.
