The Cactus Bowl: A shootout in the making?
For fans of Arizona State and West Virginia football, the Motel 6 Cactus Bowl in downtown Phoenix tonight represents one last chance to end an uneven season on a positive note.

Story of the game: West Virginia’s offense averaged eight yards per play and a ridiculous 19 yards per completion as the Sun Devils’ defense offered little resistance to the passing game.
Coach Todd Graham is the only coach in Sun Devils history to reach a bowl in his first four seasons…. We didn’t. Mismanagement on our part.
Mountaineers quarterback Skyler Howard rifled a pass in the direction of Shelton Gibson early in the first quarter of Saturday night’s Cactus Bowl.
“I thought (we) took really quick shots that got them out in transition”, Schneider said of the stretch that gave West Virginia (12-3, 1-1) a 36-17 halftime lead, “and then committed multiple turnovers in that quarter that also got them out in transition, and I felt like the second quarter was the big difference in the ball game”. When we watch ASU vs West Virginia live streaming or on TV tonight, the key to a Sun Devils win is whether they defense can hold up.
The West Virginia Mountaineers (7-5) take on the Arizona State Sun Devils (6-6) in the Cactus Bowl on Saturday.
“He is gritty, he doesn’t ever give up, he continues to go”.
Shots didn’t fall, the ball too often ended up in the hands of its opponent and Kansas University’s women’s basketball team dropped its fourth consecutive game Sunday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse, where West Virginia handled KU, 65-45. “He just keeps going to work every day and keeps getting better and better”.
Arizona State’s explanation is much simpler. Arizona State’s Mike Bercovici…he only mustered 418 yards and 4 touchdowns.
“It was my fault; should have made sure it happened”, Graham said of the 2-point conversion gaffe. The Sun Devils led 10-9 with 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Arizona State, meanwhile, ranked second in the Pac-12 stopping the run, but ranked 126 out of 127 teams nationally in pass defense. “They did what we did, you add some malcontents and they went elsewhere and you think you’re not going to be as good and you end up being so much better because you have everybody on the same page”. Trouble was, the Mountaineers couldn’t capitalize, settling for three field goals.
The down and distance didn’t appear to faze Howard as he connected with wideout Ka’Raun White for a 53 yard gain down the right sideline. The Sun Devils won the only previous meeting with West Virginia 42-7 at home in 1979….
After three scoreless drives, junior quarterback Skyler Howard threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to freshman quarterback/wide receiver David Sills to cap off a 75-yard scoring drive.
“They kept throwing over the top and scoring touchdowns”, Graham said.
Play of the game: We should have known early on that this game was going to get really weird. @WVUfootball has 532 passing yards, breaking a 24-year old #CactusBowl record. But then it failed on three tries from inside West Virginia’s 5-yard line and settled for another field goal later. The computer is taking the Mountaineers to cover and over on the point total. This was tweeted out in the third quarter or so.
Howard threw first-half touchdowns of 59 yards to Gibson and 10 yards to Shorts to help the Mountaineers take a 22-18 halftime advantage.
