Fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio
In the wake of the Tamir Rice grand jury decision, a coalition of Cleveland-based activists called for the prosecutor’s ouster Wednesday and warned of intensified protests.

Coalition members, including Basheer Jones from the Cleveland Renaissance Movement, Wednesday called for people from all walks of life to become involved with the Coalition’s movement for change.
Prosecutors in Cleveland are defending their decision to recommend that a grand jury not bring charges against two officers in the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice.
“We all believe that not only has Mr. McGinty brought ridicule and embarrassment to our community, he has made intemperate remarks, disparaged the families of victims and has wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars and man-hours to deny justice in police involved shootings”, the coalition of Cleveland activists said in a statement today.
Michael Nelson is president of the Cleveland NAACP and a criminal defense attorney.
But the Times said the grand jury’s ruling reflects a deeper, more pervasive problem than the administrative and clerical errors that impeded the officers from approaching Rice as “probably a juvenile” with a gun that was “probably fake” – two caveats mentioned by the 911 caller who alerted authorities to Rice before the child was killed. He says the coalition has already filed a motion with a county judge to release the transcripts.
Cuyahoga County Prosecuting Attorney Timothy McGinty on Monday said a grand jury followed his recommendation and cleared two officers in the November 2014 fatal shooting of Rice, who was brandishing a replica gun in a park. “If a witness is promised that and expects it, it’s going to be rare that the court will open up the grand jury proceedings for public inspection”. “I believe that the community’s angst will cause the mayor and his legal team to do that”.

Jackson’s office has not returned a request for comment on the coalition’s demand.
