Sheikh Nimr’s execution has caused worldwide outrage and a serious escalation of diplomatic tensions in the region.
Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani condemned the execution as “inhuman”, but also urged the prosecution of “extremist individuals” for attacking the embassy and the Saudi consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad, state media reported.
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir announced that Saudi Arabia is severing ties with Iran after the embassy attack in Tehran.
His case was championed by United Nations chief Ban Ki Moon, and by Tehran, where top officials warned that Nimr’s death would “cost Saudi Arabia dearly”.
“Oil started the new year on the mend, as Asian markets reacted to fears that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East may threaten the supply of oil”, said Bernard Aw, market strategist at IG Markets in Singapore.
“The UK is firmly opposed to the death penalty”.
Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and 46 others were executed on Saturday after being convicted of terror-related offences.
Relations between Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia and Shia-dominated Iran have been strained for decades, with Riyadh frequently accusing Tehran of interfering in Arab affairs. It is essential that diplomatic missions are properly protected and respected.
Mogherini said she and Zarif had agreed that no effort should be spared by all parties to keep the situation under control and to prevent sectarian tensions from escalating.
A diplomatic rupture between the major Sunni and Shia powers in the region will resonate across the Middle East, where they back opposing sides in many destructive wars and simmering conflicts. “I urge all parties in the region to show restraint and responsibility”.
Treasury financial secretary Mr Gauke told Sky News’ Murnaghan programme: “Clearly it is a very worrying development and we oppose capital punishment in this way, we think that that is wrong”.
1987 HAJJ RIOTS: The annual pilgrimage to Islamic holy sites in Saudi Arabia, required of all able-bodied Muslims once in their life, saw bloodshed when Iranians held a political demonstration. He spoke during a weekly press conference in Tehran.
Earlier, the Iranian government had summoned the Saudi ambassador to condemn al-Nimr’s execution.
The execution of al-Nimr, a central figure in Arab Spring-inspired protests by Saudi Arabia’s Shiite minority, sparked protests across the Mideast and attacks on Saudi diplomatic facilities in Iran.
“We are determined not to allow Iran to undermine our security”.

“Essentially, the message for both was that the Saudis will not be pushed around by anyone”. All Saudi diplomatic personnel in Iran have been called home. “The only thing he did was public criticism”. Iran also has backed Shiite rebels in Yemen known as Houthis.
