Four bodies have been recovered after a group went canoeing on a lake in Walworth County early Sunday.

They had gone to visit a friend whose parents have a house on Lake Beulah, about 35 miles southeast of Milwaukee. They also noticed some wallets and cellphones that the men had taken out of their pockets and set along the shore, he said.

ABC 7 Searchers look for two more men who got into a canoe early Sunday and likely drowned 35 miles from Milwaukee.

Roberts said the search for the other two men will resume on Monday. Their beds were empty, but a trail of snowy footprints found led the victims’ anxious friends to the cabin’s boathouse, where a 14-foot canoe had been stored.

Roberts said rescue workers didn’t see any life jackets or personal flotation devices on the bodies, in the boat, or floating on the lake. No foul play is suspected.

Speaking at a news conference Sunday, East Troy Police Chief James Surges said investigators believe the canoe overturned and that the four tried to climb out of the water, but that the thin ice beneath them kept breaking.
