10th Paris attacks suspect arrested and charged
Brussels has cancelled its annual New Year’s Eve party and fireworks for security reasons, the mayor announced on Wednesday, as the Belgian capital remains on high alert over a possible terrorism threat. An investigating judge will decide whether to keep the six in custody or release them, the prosecutor’s office added.

That arrest came a few days after Belgian police arrested two men – Saïd S. and Mohamed K. – because they too had plans to carry out terrorist attacks this evening or early in the morning on January 1.
There were instead plenty of private firework displays throughout the Belgian capital at midnight, accompanied by cheers and loud music, but the celebrations were vastly diminished compared to last year’s.
In a statement Thursday, the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office said “about 10 cellphones” were seized during the search, and are being examined.
“In these circumstances, we can’t check everyone”, Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur said.
The Somali government, which faces an active insurgency from al-Shabaab militants, has banned celebrations of Christmas and the New Year over fears of attacks.
Last year 100,000 people turned out in Brussels to welcome in the New Year.
The terror threat was sufficiently high that officials were forced to scrap the New Year’s Eve fireworks display and related festivities in the city centre.
On Nov. 21, the terror alert level for the Belgian capital area was temporarily raised to its maximum level after authorities announced they had received credible information that a terrorist attack could be imminent.
On Wednesday, Turkish police arrested two suspected IS members over an alleged plot to attack celebrations in Ankara.
The probe was not connected to the November 13 attacks in Paris, in which numerous suspects including presumed ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud and fugitive Salah Abdeslam had connections to Belgium.
Approximately 600,000 people gather around the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, andChamps-Elysees to ring in the new year, according to Sky News. Bazarouj’s family is considered radicalized, and one of his brothers reportedly left for Syria about a year ago to join the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks.

The world is ringing in the New Year among heightened fears of terror attacks that have led to some displays being canceled, while NY officials say their security measures will ensure safe surroundings while the ball drops.
