What is Wi-Fi HaLow and why does it matter?
With the announcement of Wi-Fi HaLow at CES this week, the call for a solution may just have been answered. The Wi-Fi Alliance intends to begin certifying HaLow products sometime in 2018, but the first of them may begin shipping shortly before then.

The Wi-Fi Alliance today introduced Wi-Fi HaLow as the label for smart home and networking products incorporating IEEE 802.11ah technology.
Currently, smart home devices use a low-power form of Wi-Fi, but which is also low-range.
As well as offering nearly twice the range of today’s Wi-Fi standards, Wi-Fi HaLow also promises to more easily penetrate walls in “challenging environments” which could give it a significant advantage over the dominant technology in this area – Bluetooth.
With the growing Internet of Things connected devices there was a need for a Wi-Fi standard for connecting all the smart things in your home 24 x 7 to the Internet. “Wi-Fi HaLow expands the unmatched versatility of Wi-Fi to enable applications from small, battery-operated wearable devices to large-scale industrial facility deployments – and everything in between”.
The new standard (an extension of the existing 802.11ah standard) operates in sub-1GHz frequencies, which offers better propagation across longer distances. The Wi-Fi Alliance is now developing a new protocol that will simplify the way we connect and configure smart devices without any use of display or input mechanisms. Like all Wi-Fi devices, Wi-Fi HaLow devices will support IP-based connectivity to natively connect to the cloud, which will become increasingly important in reaching the full potential of the Internet of Things (IoT).

“Wi-Fi Alliance programs have been instrumental in shaping and guiding the industry”, said Phil Solis, ABI Research. However, companies making these connected gadgets have been reluctant to use Wi-Fi. Additional IoT-related activities are underway in Wi-Fi Alliance that are helping to further proliferate Wi-Fi in the Smart Home and other segments. That should open the floodgates to a lot of new 900Mhz-enabled devices in the near future, and not just smart toasters. The Wi-Fi HaLow will be able to adapt to existing Wi-Fi protocols which means you do not have to spend extra money on additional network equipment.
