Mayor Rahm Emanuel named Sharon Fairley to overhaul the staff.

The IPRA is the independent agency that investigates every shooting involving a Chicago police officer.

However, police and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have said little else about what happened the night of the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation by the city’s Independent Police Review Authority.

Emanuel appointed Fairley – replacing Scott Ando – amid the protests that began with the release of video footage in November of Chicago Police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in October 2014.

Critics say IPRA has been too willing to accept police officers’ justifications for shootings.

The ruling tosses a April jury decision that found two officers were justified in killing Darius Pinex during a 2011 traffic stop.

IL law only addresses the recall of a governor.

The city’s law department did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

“The difference is, we are no longer going to be standing by a hard-and-fast rule that we will never discuss the details of an investigation until it’s complete”, Fairley said, speaking to media in her offices on the Near West Side. “I think that position is now untenable”.

Fairley also announced Monday that she was not aware of any video of another recent disputed police shooting.

Power Rogers and Smith, P.C. said in a release that the officer who fired his weapon at the home of Bettie Jones on December 26 “knew or should have known that one or more innocent persons were inside the property”. Quintonio LeGrier was also killed in the shooting after allegedly threatening his father with a metal baseball bat.
