Sphero Teases “Force Band” at CES – Control Your BB-8 with Gestures

Every Star Wars fan dreams of being able to use the Force, and now thanks to the folks at Sphero you’ll be able to do just that. Although the product featured in the video below is a prototype and could see some tweaking, the basic idea is that you’ll be able to control your droid using various gestures. However, a prototype Force Band motion controller will now let you act out your Sith Lord or Jedi fantasies – depending on whether you opted for the light or dark side prototypes being demoed at CES this week. BB-8 is based on years of past iPhone-connected ball-shaped robotic toys that Sphero has released, and in our review, we called it Sphero’s best toy yet.

Here’s how the Force Band works, at least in its current state. You’ll need to be careful when piloting him, though, as its exceedingly easy to accidentally move your hands in a way BB-8 doesn’t like and knock him right off course.

The wrist-worn Star Wars Force Band can be used to control the BB-8 toy (i.e. roll it around the place) using gestures, which make it appear like owners are actually commanding The Force.

BB-8 may have been the real breakout character of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

And if you’ve seen the movie and find you prefer the worn-out look on BB-8 instead of the original shiny version, Sphero will also be selling a new “battle damage” edition of the droid that has clearly survived an adventure or two.
