Kevin Steele to leave LSU for Auburn defensive coordinator role

Auburn won the game on the field in Birmingham and at the negotiating table as well Wednesday. Before coming to LSU, Steele worked at Alabama, his second stint with the Crimson Tide as a personnel member and linebackers coach.

Shortly after Auburn’s 31-10 win over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl, head coach Gus Malzahn confirmed that LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele would assume the same position at Auburn. “He’ll fit in very good, and I think he’s going to take over a very talented group”.

FootballScoop.com, a Baton Rouge-based site covering football coaching changes around the country, said the deciding factor may be Steele’s becoming vested in the state of Alabama’s retirement system.

Steele comes to Auburn from LSU, where he served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach this season.

He’s had a number of other coaching stops, including coaching linebackers for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.

In 2015 Steel’s defense at LSU allowed 342 yards a game, which was 25 best in the nation. The Advocate reported earlier that LSU made an effort to keep Steele around.

“This day is about winning this bowl game”, Malzhan said. Then he took the defensive coordinator/linebackers coaching position at Clemson for the next three years.

After a morning full of speculation surrounding the team’s defensive coordinator vacancy, Malzahn revealed Kevin Steele as Will Muschamp’s replacement.
