In response, Modi emphasised on Pakistan to take firm and immediate action against individuals responsible or terrorists linked to Pathankot airbase attack.
According to reports, Sharif assured Modi that his government would take prompt and decisive action against the terrorists. “The United States certainly believes that warmer relations and more cooperation between the government of India and the government of Pakistan would be in the interests of both countries”.
An element of uncertainty on Monday prevailed over next week’s Foreign Secretary-level talks with Pakistan amid indications that these may be deferred in the wake of the terror attack.
An umbrella group of Kashmiri militants has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on an Indian military facility that stretched over days.
There was, however, no formal statement by the government of Pakistan about the telephonic conversation.
The former Union minister said, “The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government and its then prime minister, Manmohan Singh, preferred outcomes over optics”.
The Indian leader paid a surprise birthday visit to his Pakistani counterpart in late December.
Sharif’s statement Tuesday noted that whenever a “serious effort” for peace between the India and Pakistan was launched, “terrorists try to derail the process”. Sharif’s office said he “conveyed his sadness and grief”.
The terrorist had snatched no less than 4 cell phones after hijacking the vehicle of Punjab Police SP Salwinder Singh, his jeweller pal Rajesh Verma and Singh’s prepare dinner and no less than two of these telephones have been used to call their handlers in Pakistan.
Kirby said the U.S. is encouraged by the government of Pakistan condemning the Pathankot attack.
A final decision on the talks, scheduled for January 15, is expected to be taken after security forces have completed their operation at the Pathankot Air Base, near the Pakistan border, the source said, requesting anonymity.
He further said that Pakistan in a statement made privately and publically had said that they would target all the terrorist groups and not discriminate when it comes to targeting them.
Parrikar conceded there had been lapses in the operation but blamed the size and terrain of the base for this. Manish Mehta, an Indian army spokesman, said the military was working at a “very fast pace” to defuse live hand grenades and gather the remains of the dead militants. A part of the air base was in civilian areas. “Also since there were civilians in the base, we needed the expertise of NSG”. He said more facts would be available after an inquiry had been conducted.

The claim of responsibility came in a statement issued to a Srinagar-based news agency.
