Woman, 11 Children Held Hostage in DeKalb County

A woman and 11 children were held hostage for hours early Tuesday at a Georgia motel, NBC station WXIA reported. DeKalb County interim Police Chief James Conroy tells WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/1SwUZux) the man was armed with a knife. It ended when police stormed the hotel room and the man stabbed himself in the neck. Inside the unit is a man, the children and a woman. The oldest child was 17 years old, police said. Thomas then stabbed himself in the neck. They gave no more details about the alleged hostage-taker’s wounds.

The children were seen leaving with their mother and police said everyone will be questioned.

“SWAT responded to the scene and attempted to negotiate with the male for a peaceful resolution to the incident”, according to a police statement.

A SWAT team was deployed early Monday to a standoff involving two adults and as many as 11 children at a DeKalb County hotel, CBS Atlanta affiliate WGCL-TV reports. No one else was injured in the standoff. Armed with a knife, Thomas refused to come out and would not let anyone leave the room, according to police.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, DeKalb County police Maj.
