President Obama’s plan to expand background checks to curb gun violence, has support from the only democratic lawmaker in the Kentucky delegation. “That’s not anything that should be taken lightly”, Shimeek Little, a resident from Conklin, said. In such cases, anyone can buy guns, including convicted felons who by law are banned from owning a firearm after being released from prison.

Gun control has become a major issue after a wave of massacres by Islamic extremists and mentally disturbed individuals swept the United States in 2015.

“I think that there’s a lot of information, mental health information, that’s not shared with the federal background checks and I think that’s usually the problem”, said Farhat.

As the largest single group of health care professionals, nurses regularly witness the trauma that gun violence inflicts on victims, families and communities. That’s why officials at Mayhood’s Sporting Goods, of Norwich, say these laws won’t have much impact on New Yorkers.

Big changes could be on the way for private gun sellers like those who sell online or at gun shows. “I’m very, very aware that we don’t want the wrong people to have guns”. People who intend to shoot somebody will have guns. “It’s a tough, it’s a tough line”.

“They find that it’s going to be infringed upon, and the second amendment says their rights shall not be infringed upon”, Mayhood said. “It’s tough to keep up with it because of different state laws and regulations and our state laws and regulations and then hear-say”.

Kimball said sales have been steady since the terrorist attack in San Bernardino. “I don’t believe that’s the best way to go about it. But I do I think we really, really need these laws”.

“They have other people that they know like a brother or sister or friend, come in, fill out the paperwork, get the firearm and give it to the other guy”.
