Probe militant claim on Pathankot attack

Parrikar said the weapons recovered at the Indian Air Force base indicate that the terrorists came from Pakistan but the National Investigation Agency’s probe would establish where they came from.

The minister will be accompanied by army chief General Dalbir Singh and Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, informed sources said.

“Pakistan will investigate in detail on the leads and information provided by the government of India”, Sharif was quoted by Radio Pakistan as saying.

“I am very, very clear that they (our officers) should not take any risk”, he said, recalling how a National Security Guard (NSG) officer lost his life earlier while trying to reportedly shift a similar body.

“Pathankot attack is not only a terror attack or an attack on humanity”. The warning came after the gunmen kidnapped an off-duty policeman near the base two days before the attack began, apparently to steal his vehicle. Six terrorists were eliminated during the encounter with the security forces. Parrikar said the militants’ weapons included AK-47 assault rifles with makeshift rocket launchers attached, mortar rounds that could be fired from the launchers, pistols, and 50-60 kilograms (110-130 pounds) of ammunition. The Pakistan PM called Narendra Modi from Sri Lanka at 3.30pm.

As per the Indian statement, Sharif “assured” Modi that Pakistan government “would take prompt and decisive action against the terrorists”.

According to a statement issued by the Indian government, Modi called for “firm and immediate action against those responsible for the air base attack”, based on specific and actionable information provided to Pakistan.

The Sena also said that had the Congress been in power today, there would have been demands to strike at Pakistan and avenge the deaths of soldiers, but now nothing is being done about the Pathankot attack in Punjab last Saturday in which seven security personnel were killed.

Talking about Islamabad targeting terrorist networks like Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad who are actively working against India, Kirby said that United States expected Pakistan to continuing fighting against the extremist groups.

The Sharif-Modi conversation followed the killing of all six terrorists in Pathankot, which is home to one of the biggest IAF bases.

Officials said they had received intelligence about a possible attack and had beefed up security at the airfield and repulsed the attackers before they reached any sensitive areas.
