Chauhan’s appointment was followed by a series of protests by students and celebrated alumni of the premier film institute.

Film and Television Institute of India students manhandled by the police force and detained for protesting against Gajendra Chauhan and Assembly council meeting to be held on January 7th.

A tough posture by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry which steadfastly refused to accept the FSA demand for removal of Chauhan, a crackdown on some students and their arrest subsequent to gherao of the institute director Prashant Pathrabe ultimately saw the long drawn out agitation by students fizzle out past year as they returned to academics. 17 of them have been issued notices by the police, warning them of cancellation of bail in case of any protests.

The union government today asked Chauhan to take charge as the chairman on Thursday amidst police security. They have been against Chauhan’s appointment, and even went on a hunger strike in 2015. They finally withdrew the strike in October, eventually stirring a nationwide debate on the alleged political appointments.

“I have been ordered by the federal government, and I will do my job”.
