Last January, six people died in an Annapolis area house fire blamed on a dry tree and faulty wiring. Residents with ID can drop off their Christmas tree at 51 Grove St., and the Town will take care of the extra transportation and composting costs required. “Instead of sending trees to landfill when their 12 days are up, residents can book a free collection to recycle them into useful garden mulch”, says Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
Although home fires that start with Christmas trees aren’t especially common, they are much more likely to be serious when they do occur, according to NFPA.
The city also offers a curbside pickup program for a fee.
With Christmas now over for another year, Douglas Council says you can do your bit for the environment by recycling your tree.

HollandTrees will only be picked up within city limits through Friday, Jan. 8.
