Abu Mohammed, founder of the underground citizen journalism campaign called Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, indicated that Hassan foreshadowed her death.

Furat al-Wafaa, who was a former member of RBSS, told Syria Direct that Hassan covered “all of the revolution’s protests” and the air strikes on Raqqa.

‘Go ahead and cut off the internet, our messenger pigeons won’t complain, ‘ Ms Hassan wrote for the final time, maintaining her good sense of humour and hope even during the most hard of times.

The journalist’s presence on social media ended abruptly in July 2015, the Independent reported.

According to a report on Arab news channel Al-Aan TV, Ruqia’s family was informed of her execution, three days ago, on charges of “espionage”.

Asked what ISIS seeks “to achieve from executing citizens and journalists who they accuse of working with foreign media”, Syria Direct responded, “IS always wants to keep the sword hovering over the people’s necks”.

Ruqia was a defiant journalist who mainly wrote about life in the Syrian city of Raqqa, which was often the bedrock of conflict between Islamic State, the Free Syrian Army and the Coalition forces.

Hassan studied philosophy at Aleppo University and in 2011 joined the student-led uprising in Raqqa against Syrian President Bashar Assad. The victim reportedly died under torture at the hands of a female jihadist, known as Oum Farouq, in the ISIS detention center in Manbij. In third place was Balochistan, Pakistan.
