It took Avatar 72 days to earn that much at the box office.
The statement also thanked fans, saying the record would not have been possible without their “enthusiasm and continued support”. If this happens Star Wars, The Force Awakens will eclipse James Cameron’s Titanic, which grossed $2.19 billion in sales. The flick which has already grossed over $700 million at the domestic box-office, is certain to overtake “Avatar” as the highest grossing flick of all-time.

The Los Angeles Times notes that analysts predict “The Force Awakens” will make more than $2 billion globally, something only “Avatar” and “Titanic” have achieved. The movie will finally open in that market on January 9th. However, The Force Awakens needed just 20 days to surpass the domestic (U.S. and Canada, combined) record, while Avatar needed 72 days to set the mark, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Of course, these numbers are not adjusted for inflation.

With a current gross of $1,536,330,824 billion, the movie has jumped over Fast & Furious 7 and Avengers Assemble to become the fourth highest grossing movie of all time. Jurassic World saw 22% million of its $1.016 billion gross come from China, as opposed to just 10% for Avatar.
