There are conflicting reports about the number of casualties.
The vehicle plowed into the facility in Zliten, where about 400 people – majority policemen – had gathered for a morning assembly, and exploded, according to Zliten Mayor Moftah Ahmadi.
A report from a rival news agency loyal to authorities in Tripoli, who are in control of Zliten, said at least 50 people had been killed and 127 wounded. Since the 2011 fall of leader Moammar Gadhafi, Libya has endured political instability and what is believed to be a growing presence of Islamic State militants.
The UN Special Representative in Libya, Martin Kobler, took to Twitter to condemn what he described as a “suicide attack”. The Lana agency said an urgent call for blood donations was made after the attack.
